Ilia Topuria will fight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight world title, a battle that will take place in the early hours of Sunday at the Honda Center in Anaheim in Los Angeles (USA).
The Spanish mixed martial arts fighter will face Australian Alexander Volkanovski, known as the Wollongong fighter, in tribute to Alexander the Great. The current champion aspires to return the intercontinental coffin.
Topuria has no other option than victory against Volkanovski. “The basis of our relationship is respect, at least on my part I have a lot of respect for him. He has been a super good champion and I am excited to take the title from someone like that, who I don’t know how many times he has defended the title , which has many battles behind it,” he explained at a press conference.
Volkanovski does not arrive at the final fight in his best moment. The Australian suffered two defeats last 2023, both against the Russian Islam Makhachev, who in the last one signed a K.O. in the first round after a high kick to the head.
Despite that hard blow, the Wollongong fighter gets back into the octagon to face Topuria, who arrives at the world title fight in his best form. “It is my moment, I have visualized it and I have prepared for this moment since I entered the sport,” says the Spaniard.
The UFC featherweight fight between Volkanovski and Topuria for the world title will take place in the early hours of Sunday, February 18, at the Honda Center in Anaheim in Los Angeles (USA). The preliminary card will begin at 2:00 a.m. The main one, at 04:00 hours. The fight can be seen on television through Eurosport 2 and all the information can also be followed through the La Vanguardia website.
