The UEFA Referees Committee has chosen a somewhat surprising route to appoint the referee team in charge of delivering justice in the Champions League final, which will measure Real Madrid against Borussia Dortmund on June 1 at the stadium in Wembley (London).
The chosen referee was the Slovenian Slavko Vincic, a figure little known in the media to the general public. Vincic, for example, has never directed a Real Madrid game.
The Slovenian has coached Borussia Dortmund, but only once, and it was this season in the second leg of the quarterfinals against Atlético de Madrid, with victory (4-2) and qualification for the yellow team.
In fact, Atlético is the team that Vincic has encountered the most since he directs matches in the elite. He has coached them five times, with a record of one win, two draws and two losses.
Vincic has coached Barça once and his was a highly controversial performance, with the Blaugrana claiming a very clear penalty at the hands of an Inter defender in the defeat (1-0) in the group stage last season.
Vincic, 44 years old and international since 2010, will be accompanied by his compatriots Nejc Kajtazović and Rade Obrenović as VAR and VAR assistant, respectively, as well as by the Italian Massimiliano Irrati as VAR support.
The also Slovenian Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kovacic will be the assistants and the French François Letexier and Cyril Mugnier will act as fourth referee and reserve assistant referee.
