Evansville CF Ty Rumsey Injured After Ball Hits Face During Super Regional Game
Evansville baseball outfielder Ty Rumsey experienced a frightening moment during the Knoxville Super Regional game on Friday. While attempting to catch a ball hit by Tennessee’s Blake Burke, Rumsey collided with the right-center field wall. The ball also ricocheted off the wall, striking Rumsey in the face.
The incident occurred in the bottom of the fifth inning, resulting in Burke picking up an RBI double as Christian Moore crossed home plate, giving the Vols a 6-5 lead. Trainers immediately attended to Rumsey, who had blood near his eye. Despite the scary collision, Rumsey remained in the game for the bottom of the fifth inning. However, he was eventually replaced by Brodie Peart in the top of the sixth inning.
Rumsey, who entered the Knoxville Super Regional with impressive stats, including a .274 batting average, seven home runs, 26 RBI, and a 16-for-18 success rate in stolen base attempts, was diagnosed with a shoulder injury. Michael Gross of Eyewitness News of Evansville reported that the initial outlook on Rumsey’s injury was not optimistic.
