But as fall approaches, some of the most exciting live performances of the year are on the horizon, offering a chance to escape the constant news cycle and election polls for a few hours. Here are some upcoming performances in Chicago that are worth checking out.

**THEATER**

Destinos: Chicago International Theater Festival
Destinos, the largest celebration of Latine theater and performance in North America, returns for its seventh year. Featuring local companies and national and international artists, this festival is a source of cultural civic pride. Some highlights include Latin Standards, Elvira, Desvenar, and a special performance of The Magic Parlour. There are also storytelling nights and physical theater performances. The festival runs from 9/30 to 11/17 at multiple locations.

Inherit the Wind
This revival of the 1955 drama by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee is timely in an election year. Directed by Henry Godinez, the production features Alexander Gemignani and Harry Lennix in the lead roles. The show runs from 9/14 to 10/14 at the Goodman Theatre.

Chicago Lore(s)Urban
Theater Company presents a world premiere play based on the story of Young Lords founder José “Cha Cha” Jiménez. Directed by Miranda González, the play explores the evolution of the Young Lords from a street gang to a radical political force. The show runs from 9/27 to 10/27 at UrbanTheater Company.

**DANCE**

She’s Auspicious
This work by Los Angeles-based Indian American choreographer Mythili Prakash uses Bharatanatyam, vocal music, and percussion to explore societal contradictions towards women. The performance questions the practice of Bharatanatyam by an upper-caste woman and addresses issues like female infanticide and unequal treatment. The show will be at the Dance Center of Columbia College on 9/26 and 9/27.

Chicago Performs
The MCA’s festival of Chicago artists presents performances by Every House Has a Door, Essi Kausalainen, Lykanthea, and cat mahari. The festival showcases a mix of performances that have been in development for years. The event runs from 9/26 to 9/29 at MCA Chicago.

Carnival of the Animals
This performance by Marc Bamuthi Joseph in collaboration with Wendy Whelan and Francesca Harper responds to the events of January 6, 2021. Inspired by Saint-Saëns’ suite, the performance uses a parade of animals to explore political and social issues. The show will be at the Harris Theater on 10/19.

Bridge Festival
Curated by Rika Lin, this festival of Asian and Asian American dance artists features works that explore themes of self, immigration, grief, trauma, and healing. The festival runs from 11/8 to 11/9 at Links Hall.
