The Effigies were a significant part of Chicago’s first wave of punk rock bands, forming in 1980 and contributing to the midwestern hardcore scene. Their music set the template for the hardcore style with songs like “Guns or Ballots.” The band went through several breakups and reunions, with frontman John Kezdy being the only constant member until his tragic death in a bike accident in August 2023. The Effigies were in the process of finishing their first album since 2007 when Kezdy passed away, making “Burned” their final recordings with him.
Bassist Paul Zamost, who was part of the original lineup, expressed mixed emotions about the release of “Burned.” He mentioned how Kezdy’s retirement and subsequent passing affected their plans for the band. The album’s creation began with a call from drummer Steve Economou in 2020, leading to the band writing new material and eventually reaching out to Kezdy for his vocals. Despite delays due to health issues and tragic events, the band felt a sense of urgency to complete the album in honor of Kezdy.
The decision to release “Burned” was accompanied by reissuing the Effigies’ back catalog, including a remixed version of their debut album. The band also had to consider their future without Kezdy and ultimately decided to bring in Geoff Sabin as the new frontman. The transition to a new lead vocalist wasn’t easy, but the chemistry within the band made it smoother. The Effigies recently embarked on a series of live shows, including opening for the Black Crowes and headlining their own concert at Metro to celebrate the new album and pay tribute to Kezdy.
In addition to the Effigies’ album release, Chicago hardcore band Si Dios Quiere also dropped their debut LP titled “No Angels.” The album showcases a blend of metal and hip-hop influences, with vocalist Ozzy Jimenez delivering powerful lyrics over intense instrumentals. The band’s unique sound and aesthetic, inspired by Chicano prison art, are evident in their music and album cover. Si Dios Quiere will be headlining an album-release party at Subterranean in December, featuring a lineup of supporting acts.
