The Sixers have officially downgraded rookie center Joel Embiid to out indefinitely with swelling in his left knee and he is scheduled to undergo an MRI Monday, the team announced following Monday’s practice.

Embiid has been sidelined since suffering a knee contusion in a Jan. 27 game against the Houston Rockets at the Wells Fargo Center.

The Sixers have officially downgraded rookie center Joel Embiid to out indefinitely with swelling in his left knee and he is scheduled to undergo an MRI Monday, the team announced following Monday’s practice.

Sixers President of Basketball Operations Bryan Colangelo said Friday that he regretted how the team had previously handled reporting Embiid’s injury.

“There’s never, ever been any effort to deceive fans, to mislead fans, to mislead [media],” Colangelo said. “We give the information as we’re given the information. We’ve got very good medical care, very good medical oversight. Everything is explainable, but injuries are unpredictable is the best way I can describe it.”

For his part, Embiid voiced concerns Thursday over how the team appeared to lack transparency in how it reported his availability since suffering the injury.

“I wasn’t happy with how it was kind of handled before,” Embiid told reporters Thursday of how the Sixers handled reporting his availability — or lack thereof — after suffering his injury. “As far as the day-to-day. I was told that I was going to miss like three or four weeks. So, I wasn’t happy with the way it was handled.

“I thought keeping my name out there was going to literally have people think about me all of the time, instead of saying when I was going to be back. I’m happy that they did that today.”
