Sergio Scariolo Describes Ricky Rubio’s Selflessness: “He Cares More About Others”

Barcelona’s playmaker, Ricky Rubio, made a surprising decision to not be called up by the Spanish national team for this summer’s FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Valencia. This choice comes after his absence from both the NBA and the Spanish national team during the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Rubio recently returned to the court during the EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers and then went on to sign with Barcelona, marking his comeback to the EuroLeague.

Despite finishing the season with Barcelona without making it to the Final Four and losing in the ACB Semi-Finals against Real Madrid, the 33-year-old point guard made the personal request to not be included in Sergio Scariolo’s team list for the upcoming tournament. In an interview with Relevo, the Italian head coach praised Rubio’s selfless attitude towards the game and his teammates.

“Ricky [Rubio] has an important quality that sets him apart from other basketball players in today’s world of selfishness and individualism,” stated Scariolo. “He proves with his actions that he cares more about others, which is a rare trait, especially among superstars in the NBA. His teammates feel comfortable and respected playing alongside him, knowing that his primary goal is for everyone to succeed.”

Scariolo also highlighted Rubio’s ability to carry his selfless mentality beyond the basketball court, emphasizing his willingness to help others in all aspects of life. The Spanish national team’s veteran head coach commended Rubio for translating his style of play into his off-court endeavors, showcasing a true commitment to making a positive impact on those around him.

With his decision to prioritize the well-being of his team and embody a selfless approach to the game, Ricky Rubio continues to leave a lasting impression both on and off the court.
