Barcelona’s playmaker, Ricky Rubio, made a surprising decision to not be called up by the Spanish national team for this summer’s FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Valencia. This choice comes after his absence from both the NBA and the Spanish national team during the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Rubio recently returned to the court during the EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers and then went on to sign with Barcelona, marking his comeback to the EuroLeague.
Despite finishing the season with Barcelona without making it to the Final Four and losing in the ACB Semi-Finals against Real Madrid, the 33-year-old point guard made the personal request to not be included in Sergio Scariolo’s team list for the upcoming tournament. In an interview with Relevo, the Italian head coach praised Rubio’s selfless attitude towards the game and his teammates.
