Las Migas is a unique musical group hailing from Barcelona, Spain. Formed in 2004 by students of the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, the group has evolved over the years to create a sound that blends flamenco with Latin American cadences. Led by founder Marta Robles, Las Migas has released six albums, with their most recent work, “Rumberas,” earning a Latin Grammy nomination.
The group’s music is a fusion of traditional Spanish folk sounds with elements of pop and hip-hop. Las Migas’ lyrics often center around themes of liberation and empowerment from a feminist perspective. Through their music, they have garnered an international following and have become symbols of the LGBTQ+ communities in Spain and Latin America.
One of their recent singles, “La Cantaora,” features María Peláe, a prominent openly lesbian Spanish flamenco artist. The song expresses a message of independence and defiance, with lyrics that reject the idea of seeking redemption or permission.
Las Migas will be performing on Friday, November 15th at the Myron R. Szold Music & Dance Hall at the Old Town School of Folk Music. The concert is open to all ages, and tickets are priced at $45, or $43 for members of the venue.
If you’re a fan of unique and empowering music, Las Migas is definitely a group to keep an eye on. Their blend of flamenco, Latin American influences, and feminist themes make them a standout in the music scene. Make sure to mark your calendars for their upcoming concert for a night of unforgettable music and powerful performances.
