Girona confirmed this Friday that it will play its home matches in the Champions League at its stadium, in Montilivi, after weeks of rumors and in which the club has considered the option of playing in Barcelona as plan B to have more capacity.
The statement published by the entity explains that the club received authorization from UEFA this Thursday so that Montilivi can host Champions League matches next season and that the European body accepts the reforms proposed by the club.
These reforms will involve “a significant economic investment” and will allow the stadium to “meet the necessary requirements for the top European competition,” according to the text.
The inability to use extra stands at UEFA tournaments will mean a reduction in the stadium’s capacity, from the current 14,600 seats to around 9,500.
Girona’s statement adds that it will soon report on the ticket purchasing process for Champions League matches.
