Euro 2024: West Midlands Police Cracks Down on Banned Fans
In preparation for Euro 2024 in Germany, West Midlands Police has taken a strict stance against football supporters with football banning orders (FBOs). Over 100 fans have been notified that they must surrender their passports or face arrest. This move aims to prevent any potential disturbances during the upcoming tournament.
According to the specialist football unit of West Midlands Police, more than 1,600 individuals with FBOs in England and Wales have been prohibited from attending Euro 2024, scheduled to take place from 14 June to 14 July. The police have designated six stations where these fans must hand over their passports within a 48-hour window spanning across Tuesday and Wednesday.
Insp Rich Cox emphasized that failure to comply with this directive could lead to serious consequences, including a jail term of up to six months or a hefty fine of up to £5,000. While the authorities acknowledge that the majority of individuals have adhered to the instructions in previous instances, they remain vigilant in enforcing the regulations.
Moreover, West Midlands Police has announced proactive measures to monitor the situation. Officers will be stationed at Birmingham Airport to intercept any banned individuals attempting to travel. Additionally, spotters will be deployed in Germany to identify and prevent any potential troublemakers during the tournament.
Fans who have surrendered their passports will be able to retrieve them after the conclusion of Euro 2024. This initiative underscores the authorities’ commitment to maintaining security and order during this high-profile sporting event.
