The Spanish Alejandro Davidovich defeated the Russian Karen Khachanov this Sunday, and will meet the Chilean Cristian Garín in the round of 16 of the Masters 1,000 in Indian Wells. Davidovich revalidated against Khachanov, world number 13 and semifinalist last year at the US Open, the victory he had achieved at Bercy 2020.
The Spaniard took the first set 6-3 and, after Khachanov’s forceful reaction in the second (6-1), he escaped 5-2 in the decisive set. The Russian managed to recover, but Davidovich achieved the decisive ‘break’ in the tenth game and secured his round pass.
Davidovich’s rival in the round of 16 will be the Chilean Garín, who surprised by beating the Norwegian Casper Ruud, third seed, 6-4, 7-6(2).
The one who suffered to get through to the round of 16 was the German Zvererv, who beat Ruusuvuori 7-5, 1-6 and 7-5 in two hours and 41 minutes, thus avenging the defeat that the Finn inflicted on him in 2021 in Miami , the only precedent between the two.
The German, who occupies the fourteenth position in the world ranking, is looking to recover sensations after the very serious ankle injury he suffered last year at Roland Garros. Indian Wells is so far the only Masters 1,000 in which Zverev has failed to reach the semifinals and the German has a demanding road ahead.
In fact, his rival in the round of 16 could be the Russian Daniil Medvedev, who also had to suffer more than expected to defeat Ivashka, number 85 in the world.
