The Chicago Reader team recently gathered for an all-staff event to review their guiding policies and mission statement, take staff photos, and welcome new team members. The event provided an opportunity for longtime staffers to reconnect face-to-face after the start of the pandemic and meet new colleagues. Managing Editor Sheba White shared her experience of meeting a political candidate in a casual setting during the event, emphasizing the importance of connecting with others in the community.

The People Issue, now in its ninth year, features 15 profiles of individuals who represent the diverse tapestry of Chicago. From artists and filmmakers to scientists and community organizers, the People Issue aims to showcase the stories of Chicagoans who contribute to the city’s vibrant culture. Each profile offers a snapshot of a Chicagoan who generously shares a moment of their life with the Reader’s writers and photographers.

One of the highlights of the People Issue is the opportunity to learn about the extraordinary individuals who call Chicago home. The issue pays tribute to Justin Cooper, a photographer, filmmaker, disability activist, and podcast producer/host whose story resonated with many readers. Cooper’s love for Chicago and his dedication to capturing the city’s beauty through his camera lens serve as a reminder of what makes Chicagoans truly special.

As the managing editor of the Chicago Reader, Sheba White brings a wealth of experience in magazine writing, publishing coordination, content management, and editing.
