The Spanish Carlos Alcaraz will face the Italian Lorenzo Sonego in the second round of the Australian Open 2024. It will be the second clash between both tennis players. There is only one precedent and it was in the 2021 Cincinnati Masters 1000, and the Italian won 6-3; 7-6.

Alcaraz has become the only great Spanish hope in Australia, after the loss of his compatriot Rafael Nadal due to injury.

If he wins, the Murcian tennis player will go to the third round knowing that one of the strong men he had to overcome along the way, the Kazakh Aleksandr Búblik, was eliminated. Alcaraz could face the American Tommy Paul in a hypothetical round of 16, the German Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals and the Russian Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.

With Búblik out, the Murcian’s rivals in the third round could be Shang Juncheng or Sumit Nagal, who will also meet this January 18.

Alcaraz will have the possibility of adding his first Australian Open and his third slam conquest, after the titles of Wimbledon 2023 and United States Open 2022.

The second round match of the Australian Open between Carlos Alcaraz and Lorenzo Sonego will be played this Thursday, January 18, no earlier than 1:30 p.m. local time, at 3:30 a.m. in Spain. The match can be seen on television on Eurosport and can also be followed live through the La Vanguardia website.
