Spain is facing an unusual meteorological phenomenon for the time: an exceptionally warm month of January, which has caused the alarms of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) to be activated. This sudden change in weather, which has transformed what would traditionally be a cold winter into a more spring-like atmosphere, has taken both experts and the population by surprise.
In view of these forecasts, Aemet has issued specific forecasts for the coming days, pointing out the presence of an anticyclone that dominates the country’s current meteorology, generating clear skies and absence of precipitation in most of the territory. This phenomenon has caused unusually high temperatures, exceeding 20ºC in some regions, a situation that did not occur in previous years for this month.
The concern extends to the Mediterranean, especially to Catalonia, where the lack of rainfall threatens to continue causing water restrictions due to the low level of the reservoirs. In parallel, Aemet’s detailed forecast includes intervals of strong wind in the Canary Islands and the Strait, morning fogs in several regions and an Atlantic front that could bring clouds but little precipitation.
In addition, a slight decrease in maximum temperatures is expected in some areas of the north and east of the peninsula, while in others, such as the Ebro valley and the northwest of the northern plateau, they could increase. So generally speaking temperatures will continue to be high for the time of year.
These meteorological circumstances seem to be established, at least, until the beginning of February. According to the Aemet forecast, anticyclonic weather will continue at the beginning of the month, although it is possible that temperatures could drop in some regions such as the Canary Islands, the Cantabrian Sea, the Pyrenees, and in the depressions of the northern and northeastern plateau.
