This Thursday, Spain will endure the most important effects of Karlotta, the eleventh storm of the 2023-2024 season. For today, wind gusts of up to 110 kilometers per hour, waves of up to seven meters and rain that could accumulate up to eighty liters per square meter are expected, according to the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
Rainfall is expected in the western half of the peninsula, the Cantabrian area and the western Pyrenees, although further progress cannot be ruled out. They can be locally strong and persistent in western Galicia. A small relief for the lack of rain in recent weeks.
However, in the Mediterranean area, one of the areas most affected by the prolonged drought, no precipitation is expected for this Thursday. Yes, it may rain starting Friday.
The wind will blow strongly in much of the country. There will be strong intervals in the northwest quadrant of the peninsula, the western coast of Andalusia and mountain systems, and even very strong on the coast of Galicia. Very strong gusts also in the northwest half and extreme north of the peninsula and in the southeastern mountains.
Given this situation, the agency keeps the orange warning activated for today (significant risk) in Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Galicia and La Rioja due to strong winds above 100 kilometers per hour, due to adverse coastal phenomena with waves that could rise to 7 meters and 80 liters of rain in 12 hours.
In the communities of Andalusia, Aragon, Catalonia, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalunya, Community of Madrid, Extremadura, Region of Murcia, Navarra and the Basque Country the alert for tomorrow is yellow (risk) for winds between 70-90 km/h and by waves in coastal regions of 4-5 meters.
As for temperatures, maximum temperatures tend to decrease in the western third of the peninsula, and with few changes in the rest. The minimums tend to rise in the northern half. In the rest of the country, without changes, except in Andalusia where decreases predominate.
The maximum temperatures will continue to be high in some parts of the Mediterranean area such as Castellón, Murcia or Girona, where they will exceed 20 degrees.
