This weekend has come with a meteorological surprise courtesy of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which has warned of a brief period of calm before a powerful nor’easter with polar cold and snow makes its triumphant entry in several cities throughout throughout next week.
To continue with the trend of Saturday, Sunday, February 18 will bring rather mild weather, with some sporadic showers in the north, thanks to an Atlantic front. Temperatures will range between 13 and 23 degrees, giving that feeling of early spring.
But let no one be fooled because on Tuesday things get serious. The Aemet has set off the alarms: we must prepare for a cold that has not been seen in the country until now. The north will be the main area affected by this storm, which will cause temperatures to drop drastically.
And what exactly does Aemet say? This change is no small feat. An Atlantic front is expected to reconfigure the current weather, bringing clouds and precipitation to much of the northwest of the peninsula. Of course, those who live in the southeast or in the Balearic Islands may be saved thanks to a lower probability of precipitation.
The highlight of this situation is the contrast to what a typical winter should be like. This year, temperatures have been playing tricks, with heat records and a notable absence of rain. Catalonia, for example, is in an emergency situation, with figures not seen for years, and is considering extreme measures such as importing water by boat if the drought persists.
