Basque citizens can now request to vote by mail for the elections to the Basque Parliament on April 21. To do this, people who decide to vote by mail must request the certificate of their registration in the Electoral Census of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country, something they can do until April 11, inclusive. Once the previous procedures are carried out, the deadline to cast the vote by mail will end on April 17.
This certificate is an essential requirement to be able to cast a vote by correspondence and can be requested, electronically, through the website www.correos.es, or, in person, at any Post office in Spain.
To request this certificate online, the interested party must prove their identity through authentication and electronic signature, accepting the following identification systems: the Euskadi electronic identification system (BakQ); the natural person certificates recognized by the Ministry of Industry in its list of qualified providers of trusted electronic services; and the electronic DNI (DNI-e).
Likewise, the request to vote by mail can be made at all Post offices in Spain. This request must be made personally by each voter, except in the case of illness or disability, accredited by official medical certification. In this case, it can be presented on behalf of the voter by another notarized or consularly authorized person.
At the time of making the request, interested parties must prove their identity by presenting their original DNI, Passport or driving license to the post office employee.
In order to speed up the procedures and avoid waiting, Correos offers the option of making an appointment to request a vote in offices, through the app, the Correos website or the Virtual Office.
Correos will deliver the applications received to the Provincial Delegations of the Electoral Census Office in the Basque Country, who will send the applicants, as of April 1, 2024, the necessary documentation so that they can vote by mail. People who request to vote by mail will receive the documentation at the address they indicate in the application, which does not have to coincide with their usual address.
