The Snow Society, Pablo Vierci’s work on which Jota Bayona’s film is based, portrays the small community created by the survivors of the Andes accident, where they are governed by their own codes. When they explain how they organized themselves to survive, they not only say that they ate human flesh, they also say that they built an assembly, democratic society. Because they immediately understood that, among living people, they could not eat each other, they had to cooperate. Today, members of that snow society recognize that some of those decisions could only be understood if you were inside.

In the Spanish reality of our days, it is very difficult to understand what we could call an independent society, where only a few understand that Junts voted no to the Amnesty law, that the opportunity to overcome the processing in Congress was lost before going into the filibusterism of the Senate, where the PP has already taken care of gaining time, which plays in favor of the anti-amnesty bloc.

In the independent society, only a few independentists make the decisions, and they do so without the necessary cooperation with other actors. In the independent society, people continue to act as if they were living in 2017. It seems that in their heads the reality of Catalonia is still that of October 1. The data says the opposite: the first pro-independence force came in fourth place in the last general elections and there is no survey, not even those of the Government of the Generalitat, that gives any chance of a yes win in a hypothetical referendum. At the same time, the toxicity of independent minorities conditions their policies. And while all this is happening, they eat each other alive.

Voting no to the Amnesty law is to encourage even more investigating judges with a lot of knowledge of law and rather little knowledge of rights, to continue to instruct delusional cases that would not pass the filter of a first-year procedural or criminal test .

To vote no is not to hear that the judiciary is also composed of hundreds of judges who were willing, yes, to have their role in a State of law, and automatically apply this law. They must now set judgments and apply sentences.

To vote that is not to fail the hundreds of people on trial who trusted to put an end to years of uncertainty, anxiety, fear or anger, pro-independence, all of them, by the way. And yes, it was said that no one was left out. But there might not be anyone left inside. Because the society of the independent is that of a few who only cooperate with the most loyal, who have no problem taking the risk that no one will be left alive.

It is the antithesis of what, in this country at this moment, would be necessary. Because the right, the extreme right, some judges and the think tanks of the international of hate, now have a few more weeks to continue to fight. To continue to lynch a president of the central government and partners who have gone further than many of us could have imagined just a few months ago.

The independent society is shrinking and no longer attracts even those who once lived from it. I am talking about the faithful of that party called Convergència, who, in the midst of decay, for pure survival, got on the independent bandwagon. That space continues to fall apart and this is, in part, the problem: they have to hide their own fragility behind blows of effect. Only a few raise their voices, reminding the members of the independent society that there is no point in going without, and that yes, they have survived, but that does not hide the catastrophe suffered by that flight called the process.
