The Generalitat has requested the Tarragona City Council to close the only space for dogs on a beach in the city. On July 10, the mayor, Rubén Viñuales (PSC), inaugurated a provisionally enabled area on Miracle beach. The City Council had not requested any permission from the Department of Land for a special use of this beach, a procedure that takes place every year in the spring. Then the Tarragona City Council was ruled by ERC, Junts and the CUP.

Without this permission, Territory, with powers to regulate temporary uses on Catalan beaches, has urged the Council to remove the signage in the area reserved for dogs at one end of Playa del Miracle, the most urban from Tarragona. It is an area of ??220 meters where dogs must be on a leash to walk on the sand or enter the sea.

The Generalitat has given ten days to the City Council, which just yesterday sent its allegations to the Territory, which paralyzes the procedure until the Generalitat resolves the case.

“It is not a beach for dogs or the start of an activity that needs a permit from the Generalitat; we can do it by virtue of our powers. We were surprised. We have acted correctly”, replies Sandra Ramos (PSC), Councilor for Animal Welfare.

The City Council’s intention for the coming summers is to create a stable beach for dogs. The provisional solution has been adopted to fulfill an electoral commitment of the new mayor. At the Miracle, an area for dogs was created in 2021, with Mayor Ricomà (ERC), but a storm washed away the sand in 2022 and the space was impassable.
