Joan Reig, drummer of Els Pets, one of the most important music bands in the history of Catalan rock, will be the mayor of ERC in Constantí (Tarragona), as confirmed by the musician himself and the republican formation.

Constantí is precisely the municipality where Els Pets (formed by Lluís Gavaldá, Joan Reig and Falin Cáceres) was born, the only band that has remained active up to now among those that became famous during the emergence of ‘Rock Català’ from the eighties, becoming in all these years a benchmark for rock and pop rock in Catalan.

But to his career of more than forty years as a professional musician, Reig will now add a “new challenge” in politics, presenting himself as a candidate for Esquerra in the next municipal elections in May in Constantí, a town present in many of the songs of the mythical group from the Catalan music scene.

“Those of you who know me know that I am a person committed to the language, culture, my country and my people. Sometimes life challenges you. Politics has always interested me, but I have always looked at it from the outside, I have always more comfortable sense in the field of thought or culture. But now is the time to take a step forward,” Reig explained in a video statement.

A cultural activist and collaborator for decades with various entities in his town, Reig has assured that, if he is elected mayor, he will work for a Constantí of “real opportunities for all” and with leftist, republican and feminist policies and with an “exciting” project “.

The drummer has argued that the local section of ERC has been asking him to take this step for a long time and they have finally agreed that it was the right time to run as mayor, with a commitment to a town with “real opportunities, taking into account the youngest and the tranquility of the elderly”.

The signing of Joan Reig also joins another media name that a few weeks ago it was announced that he would be on the ERC lists, in this case in Lleida: that of referee Xavier Estrada Fernández, emerging as number five on the Republican list in that city .

Estrada Fernández, currently a VAR referee, but who for twelve years was a referee in the First Division and European competitions, recently appeared in the media due to a lawsuit filed alone against José María Enríquez Negreira and his son, for the possible commission of a crime of corruption or sports fraud, in relation to the large sums that they received from FC Barcelona.
