The Civil Guard has arrested a Podemos councilor in the Son Servera Town Hall (Mallorca), Francisco Javier Mora Sureda, accused of physical and psychological abuse of his two children following a complaint filed by the grandmother of the minors, who are 15 and 13 years. The woman claims that the abuse has been physical and psychological and has continued for months.

The investigators gave credibility to the woman’s complaint after carrying out a series of checks and the man was arrested this Wednesday at his workplace, in the municipality of Son Servera. The arrest was carried out by agents of the Civil Guard, which has caused surprise in the municipality.

After learning of the arrest, Podemos has sent a statement in which it states that the councilor was part of the party’s lists as number two in Son Servera, but as an independent, since he is not affiliated. In any case, they ask that he leave his position after the complaints filed by the grandmother and the arrest by Civil Guard agents.

Podemos states that it respects the development of investigations and the presumption of innocence in judicial processes, but clarifies that this presumption of innocence “does not apply to their political responsibilities or to the social condemnation that being suspected of child abuse entails.” The Podemos leadership assures that it rejects any type of violence against children. “Anyone suspected of having assaulted or mistreated a minor could not be further from the ideals and policies that we defend,” he says.

The party insists that, since it is not a member, the party cannot take any disciplinary action. It also reiterates its condemnation of any aggression or act of violence against children and adolescents, as well as Podemos’s commitment to the fight to eliminate all violence against children.
