His office announced Thursday evening that Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) is currently in recovery at a Washington hospital following surgery to repair a fractured hip sustained from a fall at home.
According to Leahy’s office, the operation was to “repair” his left hip. The doctors later decided to perform “hip replacement surgery,” which was done Thursday afternoon.
Marcelle Leahy and her husband, Leahy, had been known to go on long walks together every day before the fall. His office released a statement after the surgery.
Leahy’s office stated that he will begin physical therapy “after adequate healing.”
His office didn’t specify when Leahy would be back on Capitol Hill. NBC News asked for comment.
The Senate will be out of session until July 11.
The Senate is evenly divided with Democrats holding the smallest margin of victory. Sometimes, a vote can be delayed by the absence of one senator.
His office stated that Leahy was born blind in one eye. This led to “a lifelong struggle for reduced depth perception.” He has had some amazing dingers, but this one caught up to him.
