Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Republican from Kentucky) said Tuesday that he was “comfortable with the contours” of a bipartisan agreement on gun legislation. He will support it if it “ends up reflecting the framework.”
McConnell stated, “I’m comfortable using the framework, and if it ends up reflecting the framework, I’ll support” it.
The Senate would be greatly helped by the strong support of Republicans.
The proposal deals provides substantial resources to states for the implementation of “red flag” laws. This allows individuals such as police and family members to petition courts to prevent firearms from being used by people they consider to be a danger to themselves or others.
Red flag laws are currently in force in 19 states and the District of Columbia. These new provisions aim to increase that number and improve their implementation.
