A month after his serious crash on a bike ride with some friends, reveals the belgian cycling legend Eddy Merckx now that the accident probably only by a fluke did not cost him his life.
The belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad interviewed Merckx about the loss of his close friend Raymond Poulidor, who died Wednesday, and in the same token, asking for the 74-year-old belgiers health after the serious crash.
– Have you seen what I have gone through, so you know that I have been very lucky. If it were not for a nurse who randomly passed (since the crash happened, red.), I think that it could have been the end for me, says Eddy Merckx to the newspaper.

Merckx notes that his latest crash took place 50 years after his infamous, gruesome crash at cyklebanen in the city of Blois. He had run a formidable season, where he had won Milan-Sanremo, Paris-Nice, Flanders, Round, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Tour de France, when he decided to participate in a banearrangement on betonbanen in Blois in France.
the Riders took pace after the derny motorcycles, and Merckx’ pacer was Fernand Wambst. When another motorcycle crashed at high speed, was Merckx and Wambst torn down. Wambst sustained an open fractured skull and died on the way to the hospital.
Merckx was unconscious for 45 minutes and had to spend almost two months to recover. He sustained the concussion and a severe injury to the pelvis, and he said since he was never the same after the crash.
He won, however, the Tour de France four more times along with a host of classics.
