the Joy is great at the Danish sports confederation (DIF), after ishockeymålmanden from Rungsted Jon Lee-Olsen Thursday, jumped out as a gay man, on TV2’s “Go’ aften live”.
No professional ishockeyherre in Denmark is the former jumped out, and according to tv2.dk has only two other ishockeyherrer in the world has done it before as active.
– We are super excited. For many years we have lacked role models who stand up and paves the way for others. Particularly in tough kontaktsport, says Morten Mølholm, managing director of DIF.
In the big sports such as football, handball, badminton and cycling, there is no precedent, where the professional gentlemen jumped out as gay.
– The most important is perhaps the fact that he sends a signal that you can reach to the top in ice hockey and other sports as a gay man. Thereby paving he way for young people who have had it hard or give up along the way.
– It can have a huge positive effect down through the ranks, so gay talents are in sport, assessing Morten Mølholm.
moreover, He believes that it can be an eye-opener for people in sports that have a machokultur.
– Some times we hear that “the reason for no entry until, that is, homosexuals are not interested in our sport, so there are not any”. It is, I think, is a truth with modifications.
– second, there are homosexuals who may be afraid to stand forward because of the reactions. On the one hand, maybe not so many gay people, but they can be scared away at an earlier stage because of the tough atmosphere in the dressing room.
– Therefore this can be a real eye-opener, even for the homosexuals themselves, believe Mølholm.
He believes that man has come so far in Denmark with the fight against homophobia, that there is no ill will, if the people within for the tough sports believes that there are no homosexuals in their sport.
– It is, perhaps plain ignorance, of course, attracts hockey and football gay, when a certain percentage of the population is gay. So are they also in sports.
– Therefore, we have the hope of role models, but we also have not wanted to press on, if they now regretted, because they were persecuted by the invective. Therefore, we hope that the environment is backing up now. Teammates and the union. It must not be a lonely battle.
Morten Mølholm tells that the DIF has set up a working group across sports with the ministry of Culture and LGBT Denmark (the Danish Association for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender).
– The work will continue. Right now our role is to send a signal to back up on, say, the DIF-the director.
