The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has shown himself willing to modulate the proposal included in the amendment to the amnesty law in its entirety, which proposes to dissolve unconstitutionally disloyal parties that, for example, may declare independence or call an illegal referendum.

The proposal of the PP was presented in public by the speaker in Congress, Miguel Tellado, last week, it caused the rejection of most parties, except for Vox, and not a few doubts among some constitutional experts.

Yesterday, Feijóo, in an interview with Onda Cero, suggested that the matches could be suspended and leave the dissolution for the most serious cases.

The president of the PP stated that perhaps the party had not been able to explain the content of the proposal. “Probably, we gave our explanation for the obvious and there are things that cannot be given for the obvious”, said Feijóo to justify that what the PP proposes has not been understood, which forced the spokesperson of the popular group to Congress, Miguel Tellado, to clarify in a second press conference the content of the amendment the day after presenting it for the first time.

The president of the PP recalled that in his electoral program there is the classification in the Penal Code of the crime of “constitutional disloyalty”, and a group of “very good” lawyers made the proposal, focusing on comparative law, for example , in Germany.

Feijóo recalled that since 2012 there have been in the legal system thirty-five causes for the dissolution of a party, from repeated embezzlement and incitement to hatred to collaboration with terrorism, and the PP he believes that it is necessary to add to the causes the calling of an illegal referendum and the declaration of independence, if the party “does not cooperate with justice afterwards”.

The president of the PP admitted that “it is possible to discuss whether to proceed with the suspension of the party first, and only in very aggravated cases, consider dissolution”, so that, if the proposal were accepted, “we would be willing to see the amendments that they present themselves”, because, he said, what the PP pursues is “strengthening the State, because there is no longer any barrier to protect integrity”.

However, Feijóo does not understand that there are parties so concerned about the dissolution of a party if it unilaterally proclaims independence. “I understand that the pro-independence people are worried, but I don’t understand the PSOE’s concern”, if it will not declare the independence of a part of the territory, said the popular leader.

For this reason, the president of the PP rejects that in order to criminalize the calling of an illegal referendum, which the PSOE proposed in 2019, the PP should be accused of “persecuting the pro-independence parties”.

Núñez Feijóo remembers that the Constitution allows the existence of pro-independence parties, and that they have nothing to fear unless they commit a crime. A crime such as the declaration of independence or the calling of an illegal referendum, because “ideas are not pursued, but crimes”, he recalled.
