After the “delicate part” of the PP candidate in the Catalan elections, in the words of Alejandro Fernández himself, Alberto Núñez Feijóo launched yesterday from Barcelona the people’s campaign underlining the importance that, for two reasons, on 12- M. The gaze is on both the Palau de la Generalitat and Moncloa, since the leader of the PP indicated that if independence does not manage to govern in Catalonia, Pedro Sánchez will no longer have his support in Congress.

This does not mean that a Government with Salvador Illa is viewed favorably, but rather that the aim of the PP is to take advantage of the “real option”, as Feijóo said, of being decisive in Catalonia and changing the political balance. For this reason, he asked that the vote be gathered around the PP so that it can once again be a reference for the “constitutionalism of today and of the future”. And he made a direct appeal to Vox voters, who want certainty in Catalonia, to PSC voters who have felt betrayed, and to those who represented Ciutadans.

“These elections can change the future of Catalonia, and in addition, begin to decide the future of Spain”, pointed out Feijóo. With three deputies currently in Parliament, and after having six in the general elections, for the leader of the PP it is important to strengthen the electorate in Catalonia to reach Moncloa.

The speech that will structure the campaign will be that of this identification that was broken down between the PSC, ERC and Junts. With the addition that it is considered that Pedro Sánchez and Salvador Illa have betrayed their voters, especially with the approval of the law of Amnesty “to treason”. In this context, he warned that depending on the results of 12-M there may be an advance of the general elections and asked his party to be prepared for this as well.

In this double vision in Catalan and Spanish key of 12-M, the PP mainly focused on the “understanding” between Sánchez and Puigdemont. “Sánchez needs Puigdemont to be president of Spain, and Puigdemont needs Sánchez to be president of the Generalitat. All the rest are stories”, he emphasized.

Feijóo visited Barcelona a day after the election of Alejandro Fernández as candidate became official after an arduous deliberative process. The visit also had the aim of staging support for the candidate – with whom he has had differences -, conveying a message of unity, since there have been divergent points of view on who should head the list. Feijóo explained that he has listened to many voices and that he has opted for “the best” in a decision “without caesarean section”. The weight of the project that wants to recover and expand in Catalonia will correspond to Alejandro Fernández and Dolors Montserrat, president of the campaign committee and spokesperson of the PPE, who received the public support of the party leader. The electoral list will unite the various sensitivities. And he asked the candidate to be able to “unite constitutionalism”.

Fernández’s words from the podium also sought reconciliation, and above all, mutual trust. “The birth was a bit complicated – he said with reference to the selection process – the child came out healthy and fighting, but he will let you sleep at night”. The popular leader indicated that an “exciting and bright stage is opening in Catalonia” and insisted that 12-M must be the first step for Núñez Feijóo to arrive in Moncloa. Only then will the process be finished, he said.

Dolors Montserrat also took the floor and appealed to the unity of the party and in this line to point out Sánchez as the one responsible for revitalizing Carles Puigdemont and the pro-independence project.

The PP wants to leave behind a difficult electoral cycle in Catalonia and take advantage, if the voters so decide, of the window they see in the 12th M. Feijóo pointed out that if the vote is “concentrated” in the PP the Catalans will be out of danger. And he spoke of Catalonia, which must once again be “the most prosperous, free and avant-garde in Spain”, after turbulent years and with a current panorama that is also turbulent. For this reason, he said that the PP is the only party that can serve as a “refuge for Catalans who want their problems solved, without partisan and ideological interests, and with cordiality between citizens”.
