Elections to the European Parliament will be held at the beginning of June. In Spain, the vote will take place on Sunday, June 9, 2024 and citizens will elect their MEPs for the next five years.
In 2024, 720 deputies will be elected, 15 more than in the 2019 elections, which will represent almost 450 million people. The call for elections came into force on April 16, after its publication in the Official State Gazette (BOE).
In Spain, 61 MEPs will be elected, two more than in the 2019 elections. The candidacies were presented to the Central Electoral Board between May 1 and 6, although the communication of coalition creation had to be made between May 17 and 26. April.
In the last week of April, the last plenary session of the current legislature was held in Strasbourg (France) and as of April 26, the institutional campaign for the next European elections of 9-J began.
Thursday, May 9, was Europe Day, which celebrates the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, considered the beginning of what is today the EU. Furthermore, there was only one month left for the elections to conclude.
The Official State Gazette published the proclaimed candidacies on May 14. The electoral campaign, which will last 15 days, will begin at 00:00 on May 24 and will end when it ends on June 7.
On May 23, the electoral debate with the candidates of the European political groups to preside over the European Commission will take place in Brussels (Belgium). The front-list system was first introduced in the 2014 elections, when former Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker took office.
Although some European countries will begin voting on Thursday, June 6, the results will not begin to be known until Sunday, June 9, when the polling stations in all countries have closed their doors.
To be officially recognized, the European Parliament groups must notify the Presidency of their respective names, political declaration and composition before 15 July.
The new legislature will begin on Tuesday, July 16. From that day until July 19, the new MEPs will meet in Strasbourg to elect their president, 14 vice-presidents and five quaestors.
