The secretary general of Podem, Ione Belarra, yesterday reiterated her demand to the second vice-president of the central government and leader of Sumar, Yolanda Díaz, to support her training in the campaign for the autonomous and municipal elections in May to be the “best political space to change things in Spain” and its “firm commitment to unity”.

Belarra’s request is particularly relevant because of the dilemma in which the second vice-president finds herself. After the presentation of his candidacy for the presidency of the Government with Sumar, Díaz has been presented with an acute dilemma: where and for whom to campaign for the imminent elections of 28-M given the complex articulation of candidacies in which they present the parties to the left of the PSOE, which are the ones that will have to support him when the general elections are called.

This diversity of candidacies means that in some places Podemos, Més País, Compromís, Esquerra Unida, En Comú Podemos and others will present themselves together or separately, which will force Díaz to have to choose or to find an imaginative solution. And the places in Madrid and Valencia are particularly difficult, where Podemos and IU are presented together against Més Madrid and Compromís.

Belarra yesterday defended the commitment to unity and recalled that his formation “has closed more agreements than ever” in the territorial sphere. “Now it must be Yolanda who decides if she wants to be the candidate for unity and for the space as a whole”, she challenged.
