The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has criticized that former soccer player Dani Alves can be released from provisional prison after having obtained conditional release with the payment of a bail of one million euros. “The money that Alves has, the money that someone can lend him, cannot buy the offense that a man does to a woman by committing rape. The president gave a speech recalling the pillars of the party and cited the case of the former Brazilian player as one of the examples of “injustices about which we cannot remain silent”, according to what the Brazilian media reported.
“We are seeing now that Alves can be released if he pays. I learned in Pernambuco (Lula’s home state), when I was little, that people said ‘here in the Northeast, they don’t arrest someone who has 20 contos de reis (an expression to indicate millions of reais, about three million euros). People see how that maxim continues,” he said.
The Barcelona Court has agreed to the provisional detention of the elusive footballer by paying a bail of one million euros in an agreement that includes the withdrawal of both passports – the Spanish and the Brazilian – until the final sentence.
The order prohibits the convicted person from leaving the national territory and requires him to appear before the Provincial Court weekly.
