The buildings of the Catalan schools are not prepared to combat the lack of comfort that high temperatures will generate in the classrooms, the Minister of Education, Josep Gonzà lez-Cambray, admitted this morning in the plenary session in Parliament. For this reason, the Department of Education has planned a plan to mitigate the sensation of heat in which priority will be given to school buildings in the worst condition, in territories with greater heat, and those that serve the most vulnerable students, such as minor children. six years old and students from special education centers.
Cambray explained that in 100 schools selected with these criteria, of the 2,500 Catalan educational centers in total, they will have air conditioning in some common space such as the library or dining room this year. This is intended to have a common space with less sensation of heat.
Currently, as he explained, there are already 539 schools that have some conditioned space thanks to the actions of town halls, institutes or parent associations.
Likewise, it has announced that 50 municipalities in Catalonia have requested authorization to carry out structural reforms in buildings to insulate them thermally or install photovoltaic plazas. Among the municipalities that have requested these reforms are Barcelona, l’Hospitalet, El prat de Llobregat or Sitges.
Precisely, the L’Hospitalet de Llobregat city council announced last week an extraordinary economic item of 2.5 million euros to install air conditioning in a common room in 36 infant and primary schools in the municipality. It will also place everyone in school yards and water fountains.
