Tourniquet syndrome in babies is rare, however, it should be kept in mind and take preventive measures. Above all, because of the danger it entails for children, since, if certain complications occur, cases could occur in which a surgical operation, such as an amputation, may even be necessary. This syndrome is a type of accident that causes strangulation of a part of the baby’s body. And it is generally caused by a hair, a thread or a fiber.
These harmless-looking elements, in very rare cases and unfortunately or accidentally, roll up and cause blood flow to be cut off. It usually happens especially on the toes, but there are also other vulnerable areas, such as the fingers, lips, penis or clitoris. This is stated in a study carried out by the Galician Health Service.
Parents should take into account a series of measures to prevent this from happening to their babies. For this, it is important to know that cases of strangulation in the fingers usually occur between two and six months. In the case of the feet, the most common, because a hair or fiber ends up getting into the child’s sock, where it gets tangled and ends up cutting off circulation in this extremity.
Luckily, the baby’s parents can take a number of actions to keep the baby safe from this tourniquet syndrome.
