It’s funny how some phrases stay stuck to you, like a piece of gum on the sole of your shoe. Victoria Beckham, who rose to fame with the Spice Girls and later formed one of the most envied couples with David Beckham, is still remembered by many in Spain for something she may not have even said: “Spain smells like garlic.”
And although years have passed since then, that phrase continues to give something to talk about, especially because the Beckhams have been in Spain recently – and it does not seem that any stench has bothered them -. The couple, along with Gordon Ramsay and his wife Tara, set foot on Spanish soil again, landing at the Villanubla airport in Valladolid, in a visit that has been anything but discreet.
The day’s agenda, as El Norte de Castilla has reported, began with an exquisite tasting menu at the Dámaso restaurant, where Victoria avoided lamb and preferred to delight in hake accompanied by purple asparagus from Tudela de Duero and other select local ingredients.
The former soccer player, for his part, did not hesitate to taste some tripe, among other dishes that included purple asparagus, ham croquettes, grilled fish rice and oxtail with cabbage. To finish, both shared some traditional torrijas.
After the meal, the visit continued at the Vega Sicilia winery, a very important name in the wine sector. There, the Beckhams and the Ramsays had the opportunity to taste wines from particularly emotional vintages: a vintage from 1975, coinciding with the year of David’s birth, and another from 1999, the year they married.
At the end of the day and with the sun beginning to set, Victoria and David said goodbye to their fleeting visit to Valladolid, heading back to London and making it clear that the supposed phrase attributed to the fashion designer is only an urban legend.
