Aging affects many parts of the human body, deteriorating its health. For example, bones become weaker, increasing the risk of developing osteoporosis, especially in women due to menopause. Another consequence is less flexibility and agility.
And as for the organs, aging brings with it a series of structural and microscopic changes in the liver. In the MSD Manual they state that one of them is that it changes from light brown to dark brown and its size and blood flow decrease, although liver tests generally remain normal.
As stated in the aforementioned portal, the liver’s ability to metabolize many substances decreases with age. This means that in older people some drugs are not inactivated as quickly and effectively as in the case of young people. Therefore, there is a greater predisposition for medications to cause side effects and adverse reactions.
On the other hand, the liver’s ability to resist aggression is diminished, so substances toxic to the liver are even more harmful. Repair of damaged liver cells is also slower. Finally, bile production and flow decreases with age, increasing the likelihood of gallstones forming.
Taking into account all this, it is imperative to follow a series of healthy habits to take care of the liver and keep it healthy. The American Liver Foundation shares 13 tips for having a healthy liver.
