The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has issued a crucial report on the risks associated with consuming food that has passed its expiration date and shows signs of mold.
In this way, it seeks to raise awareness among the population about the dangers of eating products in poor condition and has identified three types of food that, despite showing mold, can be consumed if the affected portions are removed.
The OCU highlights the risks inherent in consuming foods with fungi, emphasizing that molds, whether green, black or white, can colonize food in such a way that they penetrate inside through the mycelium, ramifications that are difficult to perceive with the naked eye. . This invasion can lead to the production of mycotoxins, toxic substances with the capacity to induce cancer and genetic alterations, as well as the growth of pathogenic bacteria undetectable by the human eye.
Despite the main recommendation to throw away most spoiled foods, the OCU points out three specific exceptions that can be consumed with caution:
The OCU highlights the importance of discarding cold cuts, bacon, sausages and soft sausages in the event of the presence of fungi, since wet foods are more prone to the growth of unwanted microorganisms.
The information provided by the OCU seeks to guide consumers towards safer and healthier food choices.
