Candidates from the 51st congressional district, Rep. Sara Jacobs and El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells, recently participated in a debate at Tempel Emanu-El synagogue in Del Cerro. The debate covered a wide range of topics including abortion, homelessness, and immigration.

Jacobs, a Democrat, highlighted her legislative record on homelessness, emphasizing her work on the “Return Home to Housing Act” for veteran homelessness. She believes that the root cause of homelessness lies in housing access and affordability. On the other hand, Wells, a Republican, argued that homelessness is primarily linked to drug and alcohol addiction, mental health issues, and societal neglect.

The issue of abortion was also discussed during the debate. Jacobs stated her belief that politicians should not have the right to make decisions for families regarding abortion. Wells, who considers himself pro-life, acknowledged California’s existing protections for reproductive health care and questioned the necessity of further restrictions.

Immigration was another contentious topic during the debate. Wells expressed concerns about the current immigration situation, emphasizing the need to address it seriously to prevent negative consequences. Jacobs countered by accusing Wells of wanting only white immigrants in the country and warned against demonizing migrants.

The voters of the 51st congressional district will ultimately decide which candidate will represent them in Washington, D.C. Both candidates have provided more information through on-air interviews available at FOX 5/KUSI’s Election Headquarters.
