Among the different personality disorders that exist, two of the most popularly known are sociopathy and narcissism. Although it is not always clear what exactly both consist of and how they shape the way of being of the people who manifest them. In fact, a sociopath and a narcissist have a number of similarities that make them have points in common.
But, on the contrary, they are two different types of disorders and which, as is to be expected, also present numerous and important differences that will be key to distinguishing them, for example, when making a diagnosis by specialized personnel.
A sociopathic person is one who presents the sociopathy personality disorder, which consists of an alteration in their social behavior, characterized by the inability to align themselves according to the moral principles that are accepted by society. Some of the ways in which this materializes is in an antisocial tendency and also the impossibility of distinguishing between what is considered good or bad. Sociopaths do not consider the feelings of others, feel indifference, guilt or remorse because of their actions. And they are highly manipulative.
Narcissistic personality disorder occurs in people who are overconfident and who overestimate their qualities, aptitudes, and abilities over those of the rest of the people around them. In addition, they feel the constant need to receive the attention and admiration of those around them. They are pushy, arrogant and lack empathy, as the focus is constantly on themselves.
One of the similarities between a sociopath and a narcissist is that neither of them have empathy towards the other, since the achievement of their goals is above the feelings of others or how they are affected. They are also manipulative and liars, their treatment of other people is superficial and they will only seek to obtain their own benefit. To achieve this, they will use another of their common points: a great charisma.
However, that’s where the similarities end. One of the main differences between a sociopath and a narcissist has to do with their motivation. While the sociopath only seeks to achieve his goals, in whatever way and without caring about others; the narcissist has a need to receive the admiration of others. That is, satisfy his ego.
And this directly ties into their other key difference. The narcissist does care how others perceive him, since he seeks to be praised by them. On the other hand, the sociopath does not care that his behaviors damage or dirty his reputation.
