September is the month of going back to work, back to the routine and, also, back to school. With the return to the classroom, the dreaded lice can appear in the children’s hair and, with them, the nightmare of moms and dads. Although they can also occur in adults, they are much more common in children due to the direct contact they have daily in schools and day care centers. They are also more likely to share belongings, be they headbands, hair ties, caps… which makes it easier for them to spread.
Lice are insects that attach themselves to the scalp of people. They measure between 2 and 3 millimeters and do not live more than a month, according to The National Pediculosis Association. However, at that time they lay eggs – nits – in the hair. Lice nits can take up to 9 days to give birth to another lice. For this reason, its reproduction in the scalp is very high.
Once the child starts scratching, we have to start preparing his removal. The first thing you can use are effective shampoos or lotions available in pharmacies for their extermination. The use of specific brushes for nits is also very effective since it will eliminate those that are attached to the scalp. Each shampoo and treatment works differently, therefore, it is advisable to ask the specialist which treatment will best suit the child’s hair.
