Spanish families increasingly value the company of animals. The number has not stopped growing in recent years, especially as a result of the pandemic. According to the 2021 Census study of the National Association of Companion Animal Food Manufacturers (ANFAAC) and Veterindustry, from 2019 to 2021, the number of dogs has increased by 38%, going from 6.7 to 9.3 million ; and cats 38%, going from 3.7 to 5.8 million. Substantial growth.
There are no changes regarding the most popular animals, which remain dogs and cats. The dogs are the pets preferred by the Spanish. According to this organization, according to the latest data, there are just over nine million dogs throughout our geography. In second place, there are the cats. Almost six million cats throughout Spain.
There are more pets than dogs and cats. The ANFAAC counts up to seven million fish. Also five million birds. In last place, there are reptiles and mammals: just over a million each.
Beyond figures, this increase in the number of pets in Spanish homes is motivated by the love and company that these animals provide. “Having a pet brings benefits to both the owners and the animals. The pet contributes its grain of sand to the well-being of the family, since it is considered one more member of the clan”, explains the professor of Veterinary Assistant and Animal Caretaker of the Zoo and Canine Training in Nubika, Juan Benítez.
Specialists remember that these animals contribute to the happiness of their owners. According to the international study A unique bond carried out by the Ipsos organization, having dogs, cats or other pets has a positive impact on health and well-being. Specifically, more than 96% of dog owners and 91% of cat owners surveyed confirm that they help them feel more relaxed, get more physical exercise and provide them with a better quality of life.
Other studies also point in that direction. Owning a pet, such as a dog or cat, especially for five years or more, may be linked to slower cognitive decline in older adults, according to recently published preliminary research (2022) and presented at the annual American Academy meeting. of Neurology (AAN). The study analyzed cognitive data from 1,369 older adults with an average age of 65 who had normal cognitive abilities at the start of the research.
In addition, “thanks to our pets we do more outdoor activities, we feel more relaxed, in harmony and this improves our quality of life,” recalls Benítez. In this sense, the Spanish Heart Foundation (FEC) points out that there is an improvement in cardiovascular health among those who have animals, especially dogs.
