Pets have become a member of the family and there are the most diverse. Cats and dogs, protagonists of adoptions, have seen other similar animals arrive at their homes, such as rabbits and guinea pigs. Some different, such as parrots and lovebirds. And others even with another type of blood, such as reptiles. However, the conditions and care requirements that the latter require distance them to a great extent from mammals or birds.
Although reducing them to home confinement, totally out of their habitat, is not the most advisable, it is essential to be aware of the demands they demand: humidity levels, minimum space, water quality, temperature. In order to at least stay in the best possible conditions. And these requirements on which their well-being depends are not exactly scarce.
The different species of geckos have their own particularities, however, a slight generalization can be made taking leopard geckos as a reference, which are the most common as pets. So the first thing that should be taken into account is what type of gecko you plan to have at home.
As regards the terrarium, it will be necessary to decide between a vertical or a horizontal one. This will depend, once again, on the species of gecko, that is, if it is one of those that spends most of its time on the ground or in the trees. Leopard geckos belong to the first group, so it is advisable to bet on one that is horizontal. And, as always when it comes to having animals at home, the more space, the better.
Another determining factor is the climate in which the gecko in question lives, since it can be desert or tropical. This will directly influence determining aspects such as the type of light it should receive, the temperature and, something especially important in the case of reptiles, the humidity levels. Leopard geckos prefer the ground, hiding places, a temperature between 28 and 35 degrees and a humidity of around 50%.
Geckos feed mainly on insects, although this, again, has certain nuances depending on the type in question. Going back to the example, leopard geckos base their diet on these beings and they must be administered alive, as prey. So there is no need to intervene in this process, they will take care of it themselves. Normally they are usually provided with crickets or grasshoppers, in batches of two to four, but not daily, but alternate days. In addition, it is advisable to provide them with mineral and vitamin supplements.
