In the Sherborne neighborhood of Dorset, United Kingdom, a family experienced distressing moments when their energetic dog, Ham, showed signs of unusual discomfort. Victoria Northwood, responsible for this two-year-old pug, reported that she usually has a lot of vitality and barks constantly. Seeing that she was completely calm and that she seemed to be sick, they decided to act immediately and take her to a veterinary clinic.
“Ham used to spend the day barking at everything that moved, but we noticed he went quiet and looked sick,” she shared. When they consulted with his trusted veterinary team, Newton Clarke Veterinary Surgery, Ham’s managers were surprised to discover the reason behind the sudden change in the dog’s health.
Veterinary surgeon Emily Whitby, while carrying out the first investigations, noticed something “strange” in little Ham’s stomach. Without wasting time, they decided to perform surgery to discover the nature of the problem. “Initial investigations by our team revealed that she had something quite ‘strange’ in her stomach and she was rushed to surgery for further investigations,” the veterinary clinic said.
“To our surprise, Ham had a stomach full of hair ties,” the surgeon explained. “In total, we removed between 50 and 60 tapes, weighing 200 grams, while Ham only weighs 6 kilos.”
Northwood confessed that they were aware that this young pug had eaten some hair ribbon, but under no circumstances did they expect their dog to have ingested such an amount.
“We are pleased to say that since the operation she has been feeling much better and is now fully recovered from the surgery. She is back to getting into mischief at home (and hopefully no longer looking for hair ties!),” the clinic reported from their social networks.
