For Catholics and other Lenten observers, forgoing favorite pleasures from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday helps to recharge their faith. They fast with the idea of becoming more spiritual and sacrifice with the hope of giving more of themselves and their time.

But when San Antonio’s own Spurs Coyote and Spurs Jesus decide to partake, well, such divine lightheartedness surely makes even the lord smile.

“Oh, I think God smiles, too,” said Slater, the first woman to serve as chancellor of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. “He enjoys our silliness.”

She’s quick to point out Lent excludes Sundays, so you can still get your Hershey’s fix or other slice of vice on the Sabbath without breaking the rules. Think of it as a cheat day without really cheating, a Lenten loophole even the most devout can forget.

“Well, I didn’t know when I was a kid either,” Slater said with a laugh.

So what are Slater and other notable San Antonians abstaining from for 40 days? Click through the slideshow for a look.
