When it seemed that in the world of cinema there were no more ideas left beyond biographical films and redoing what was once done, projects arise that try to combine both ideas and, why not, give them a twist that They will make moviegoers flock to movie theaters if only out of curiosity.
That will possibly be the case of The Carpenter’s Son, the new film by the Egyptian-born director Lotfy Nathan (responsible for Harka, the fiction about social injustices that revealed in Cannes 2022), which ventures to narrate a new version of the life of Jesus of Nazareth in a key of terror. The best thing is that it already has its main actors.
British singer FKA Twigs, whose real name is Tahliah Barnett, has been chosen to play “The Mother”, known as Mary’s substitute, in The Carpenter’s Son. She will do it alongside Nicolas Cage, who will play “The Carpenter” and Noah Jupe, who will play “The Child.”
A film that has everyone intrigued, not only because of the varied nature of its protagonists and their artistic origins, but also because of what the result could be like in the hands of Nathan, who bases the script on the apocryphal Gospel of Saint Thomas, dated from the 2nd century AD and which recounts the childhood of Jesus.
According to the official synopsis of the film, The Carpenter’s Son will tell the dark story of a family that has to hide in Egypt at the height of the Roman Empire. The son, simply known as The Boy, expresses doubts because of another mysterious boy, which leads him to rebel against his guardian, who is known as The Carpenter. It is at that moment that The Child reveals inherent powers and a destiny beyond his understanding. As he wields his own power, the Child and his family become the target of horrors, natural and divine.
A clearly intriguing film that Nathan will direct. The director of Egyptian origin already caused a sensation with his first fiction feature film, Harka, inspired by the real figure of Mohamed Bouazizi, whose self-immolation triggered the Tunisian revolution of 2010-2011. The film won praise for its human approach, triumphing at Cannes in 2022 and landing the best actor award for Adam Bessa.
This new project, which will begin filming this summer, represents a great opportunity for its protagonists. Nicolas Cage will play “The Carpenter” after being nominated for the Golden Globes in its last edition for Dream Scenario.
FKA Twigs, for her part, combines her musical career with her film projects. The artist has just released a new album and, this summer, we will be able to see her in the remake of El Cuervo.
