In recent weeks, several cases have come to light of Spaniards who were outside our borders when they suffered health problems. This was the case of Álex García a few weeks ago, who had to be repatriated from Thailand after suffering from watery pancreatitis while traveling. Recently, the case of Adrián Fernández, a Spaniard in an induced coma in Cancún, who cannot be transferred to Spain, has come to light. And now Sonsoles has revealed the reasons.

Adrián’s case maintains a certain similarity to that of Álex. The Spaniard was traveling in the Mexican city when he suffered a drowning due to cardiac arrest when he was in the pool of the hotel where he was staying, with his partner and his son. “Not only is he in an induced coma after drowning due to cardiac arrest, but now, travel insurance can no longer cover the costs of hospitalization,” he details in the Sonsoles Ónega program.

Now the hospitalization expenses are unaffordable for the family. In just two days, they have exceeded the insurance budget. According to the program, keeping Adrián hospitalized costs 8,000 euros a day. On the other hand, the Spanish embassies do not help the couple, and claim not to be able to repatriate them to Spain. Sofía, the hospitalized man’s wife, is currently asking for help to be able to return to our country so that her partner can remain hospitalized close to home.

“There are no necessary means to continue with the treatment and the machines he needs,” Marta, Sofía’s sister, assured Y Ahora Sonsoles. “He is in a very critical moment, between life and death, and any change made to him could be very detrimental to him. He can’t move, he can’t travel. He has to stay there, there is no option. The situation is desperate,” the woman expressed.

“We have spoken with the Government, which is trying to speak with the Spanish embassy to see what they can do, to try to speak with the hospital, to see if the costs can be lowered,” said the woman, ensuring that the family is unable to “assume” the costs of hospitalization. The woman assures that they have also made an appeal on social networks, from where they have received help, but even so, “it is not enough.”

“The maximum allowed by the type of policy they have contracted has been exceeded,” explains the woman about the insurance. “We have had to mobilize, from the beginning the embassy made it clear to us that they could not offer us financial help,” Marta explained to the program. A desperate situation for which they are now asking for help and mobilization.
