A few months ago, Netflix officially confirmed the second installment of The Squid Game, one of the most successful productions on the content platform. The Korean series premiered in September 2021 and remained in the top 10 most watched series on Netflix for months.
Now, a year and a half later, the streaming platform republishes content related to the premiere of the second season of the series, in which we can read “Coming soon”. Netflix shared a statement from Hwang Dong-hyuk, creator of the fiction, with new information about the plot a few months ago. “Green light, you can now run and stop. The squid game will have a second season,” read a tweet from the company.
Now Netflix has shared a new image of Young-hee’s eye, the fearsome doll from “green light, red light”, one of the contest games. At the moment the release date of the second season is unknown, although everything seems to indicate that the followers of The Squid Game will have to wait patiently.
“A new round is coming. Although it took us 12 years to release The Squid Game, it only took 12 days for it to become the most popular series in Netflix history,” Hwang Dong-hyuk began by explaining in a statement. “As the writer, director, and producer of The Squid Game, I want to send a huge hello to fans around the world. Thank you so much for watching and loving our series,” the creator continued.
“And now, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) returns. The Leader (Lee Byung-hun) returns. Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with the ddakji (Gong Yoo) may return. Also, you are going to meet Cheol “su, Young-hee’s boyfriend. Play with us again in this new round,” he added.
Vanity Fair anticipated last June that Hwang was “in the midst of final negotiations with Netflix for a second season”, which could come out at the end of 2023 or in 2024.
“Humanity will be put to the test through these games once again. I want to ask if true solidarity between humans is possible,” the South Korean director commented at the time. In another interview with The Playlist, Hwang stated that he doesn’t want to make spoilers, “the only thing I will say is that there will be new games. Even better games are waiting for you than in the first season.”
Little is known about the cast of the second installment of the series, although according to the series’ director, actress HoYeon Jung, who played Kang Sae-byeok, could return even after her character’s death. Hwang declared that “maybe she has a twin sister, you’ll see.”
