This Tuesday the alarms sounded. The official Apple TV account had uploaded an image with Brendan Hunt, Brett Goldstein and Nick Mohammed in the AFC Richmond locker room with the following phrase: “Smells of potential.” Ted Lasso fans took its meaning for granted: the sports comedy will have a spin-off focused on the football club with Beard, Roy Kent and Nate as technicians, since they are the ones who stayed in London after the coach’s departure Lasso played by Jason Sudeikis. Mohammed even uploaded this very post with a face that indicated that he had his mouth shut. But even after this hint, the future of production is up in the air.
According to Lesley Goldberg, editor of The Hollywood Reporter, it is not time to throw the bells on the fly. The tweet in question was not intended to open the mouth about a possible spin-off or continuation without Ted Lasso, but was a publication that was intended to recall a certain scene from the third season. “The future of Apple’s Emmy winner remains unclear after what seemed like a series finale that left the door open for at least two different spin-offs,” the journalist explained.
He is not without reason. As reported by the media, the writers’ room led by Jason Sudeikis wrote the third season as if it were the last because, as Sudeikis himself explained, the story led them to the natural conclusion of a stage. Hunt and Goldstein, also writers for the series, stated that they always thought the series should have three seasons. “It would be pretty cool if, given how much everyone loves this show, we stood our ground and actually did three seasons,” Hunt said.
The unusual thing about the situation is that, despite these rumors and these statements, the content platform never announced the third season as the last. By comparison, other critically acclaimed series such as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Succession or Barry aired the end of their stories in parallel after announcing that they were the final conclusions. And, taking into account that it is the most successful series on Apple TV, the only one that penetrates the cultural media conversation and that has allowed the platform to win the Emmy for best comedy on two occasions, the idea of ??closing the fictional universe after only three seasons seems far-fetched.
In fact, it cannot be ruled out that the reason why Ted Lasso is in this limbo (without having officially finished, without having announced its continuations) could be caused by the writers’ strike in the United States. Apple had hosted a party to celebrate the season three finale during PaleyFest, which was canceled due to weather in Hollywood. “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Ted Lasso season finale screening and event planned for Tuesday, May 30 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills will not take place as scheduled,” they informed attendees, returning the amount of the tickets. Was that perhaps the scenario in which Ted Lasso was going to report his future plans?
And it is that, as the last episode indicated, the story led to the possibility of producing multiple spin-offs. The first of these is a direct continuation of Ted Lasso with the entire cast except for Jason Sudeikis. He could cover the future of the team with Beard, Roy Kent and Nate as managers. There could also be a spin-off with these three in charge of a new locker room: the one for the women’s soccer team that Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) and Keeley (Juno Temple) planned to create. These two ideas, for the record, could also lead to two different series: the three technicians training a new team and, instead, the female characters addressing their new sports adventure from AFC Richmond.
Finally, a direct sequel to Ted Lasso set in America should not be ruled out. Jason Sudeikis wanted to close the stage because of how uncomfortable it was for him to work 9,000 kilometers away from his children, the same conflict that affected his character. And, in the season finale, there was a very subtle joke that could portend a future project filmed on American soil: at the airport, coach Lasso saw a magazine announcing that Zava (Maximilian Ozinski) had signed for LAFC. Will the Californian team be looking for a new coach?
The mystery could be solved in a matter of hours. Or, on the contrary, Ted Lasso can remain in limbo for months. If the delay is due to the development process of the hypothetical sequels, the writers are currently unable to work on any scripts or brainstorming sessions.
