The difficulties continue around the new lace of the Dukes of Sussex and their children in the next big event for the British royal family: the coronation of Carlos III, which will take place on May 6. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle received invitations to the ceremony, and now a source close to the couple has slipped to OK! that they would be in negotiations so that their children – Archie, three years old and Lilibet, one year old – are included in the protocol of the celebration.
According to The Times, the children of Prince William and Kate Middleton —Prince George, 9; Princess Charlotte, 7; and Prince Louis, 4, will be in quite the spotlight as they will take part in the procession back to Buckingham from Westminster Abbey by carriage after their grandfather and Queen Camilla are crowned. Other members of the royal family, such as Princess Anne or the new Duke of Edinburgh, will participate in the same procession, but Meghan and Enrique or their children are not expected to participate in the official documents.
It is also unclear if the Sussexes will be invited to pose on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after that procession. They were already parted from this colorful tradition during Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee, but now, the same sources reveal OK! that the Sussexes would like to pose for the photo with their family, the one that they have criticized so much for being racist, ruthless and abusive.
Some media continue to doubt Enrique and Meghan’s attendance at the ceremony if the British royal family finally does not give in to their requests, but their absence at the coronation would be a scandal and the end point in their relations with the Windsors. Enrique would overshadow his father’s big day if he does not appear at Westminster Abbey, and Meghan’s absence would leave her with no more material to continue telling the adventures and misadventures of a princess by surprise.
After the resignation and the multiple revelations about the privacy of the British royal family, Meghan and Enrique have become uncomfortable guests. The precedent within the family is the short-lived King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, the disowned Dukes of Windsor, but they were not invited to the coronation after their resignation. Those were other times and Enrique was not in the natural line of succession to the throne, as he titled his book was about the Spare (replacement, in Spanish).
If there is no other occasion, the coronation of Carlos III will be the fourth time that Markle has visited his British relatives since he resigned in 2020. The first occasion was due to the visit of the Sussexes to Europe on the occasion of the Invictus games, whose last edition was held in The Hague; the second was for the platinum jubilee; and the third, for the funeral of Isabel II. For his part, the prince also traveled for the funeral of his grandfather.
A few weeks ago it was revealed that Carlos III had decided to end the transfer to Meghan and Harry of Frogmore Cottage, the residence that the Dukes of Sussex reformed and in which they only lived for about eight months. That means that if they do eventually visit London for the coronation, they will have to be accommodated elsewhere. According to some British tabloids have slipped in recent weeks, the monarch would have offered them Prince Andrew’s former apartment in Buckingham, which he emptied months after the death of his mother.
