On December 21, 1983, the Spanish team led by Miguel Muñoz beat Malta 12-1 in a historic match. RTVE will remember that mythical feat, with which Spain qualified for Euro 84 coinciding with its 40th anniversary, in a special program that will include the rebroadcast of the clash along with images, interviews, memories and anecdotes of what happened in one of the matches most important of the selection.
For many years, Spain’s 12-1 victory over Malta at the Benito Villamarín stadium in Seville was classified as a feat, the match of the impossible, the never seen before. And it is remembered as a brooch and symbol of that night of rain of goals, the “rooster” of José Ángel de la Casa, when the Lord’s goal arrived; the goal that allowed that group to close its classification. Generation after generation this match has been relived and stories have been told about what happened those days in Seville.
Now that it is 40 years old, RTVE has prepared this special program, which will be broadcast this Thursday on Teledeporte and RTVE Play from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., as a tribute to the footballers who starred in that feat such as Buyo, Camacho, Maceda, Goikoetxea, Gordillo, ‘Lobo’ Carrasco, Víctor Muñoz, Santillana, Sarabia, Rincón and Zubizarreta, and RTVE journalist José Ángel de la Casa, narrator of the meeting.
Presented by Marcos López and Paco Grande (initiator of the tribute to the national team players and José Ángel de la Casa held last November in Seville), the special program will offer a first block with interviews, reports and the goals of the qualifying phase from group 7, in which Spain competed with Holland, Ireland, Iceland and Malta. Afterwards, the full match will be rebroadcast, exactly as it was narrated, with José Ángel de la Casa and Alfonso Azuara. And finally, in a third block, more images, interviews, memories, anecdotes and everything that happened afterwards at the team’s concentration hotel will be offered.
