On Tuesday we had the final episode of the third season of Only Murders in the Building and, as is becoming customary, the comedy said goodbye with an announcement: it is renewed for a fourth season that, at least, will feature the leading trio made up of Martin Short, Selena Gomez and Steve Martin, who is the creator of the series with John Hoffman.

The series, which Disney broadcasts in Spain, has become a guarantee of quality. The first season won three Emmy Awards (guest actor for Nathan Lane, production design and sound mixing) from its 17 nominations, where it competed for best comedy, directing, writing and leading actor for both Martin and Short. The second season also has 13 nominations and competes in comedy, script and actor for Short in the next edition of the Emmys to be held in January.

With the third season just aired, Only Murders in the Building consolidated the formula of comedy, mystery and loneliness with a new crime: the murder of a Hollywood star (Paul Rudd) who was going to debut on Broadway in Oliver’s new play ( Martin Short). Among the suspects, this time included Meryl Streep, the winner of three Oscars, who had a role tailored to her: a kind of alternative version of herself, the one who failed to succeed on stage when she arrived in New York. in the seventies with a suitcase and the desire to work in acting.

As happened in the previous installments, the resolution of the mystery was accompanied by a new murder in the last moments. For those who have not yet seen the episode, it is better not to go into details. But the ten episodes broadcast and their conclusion confirmed a reality: Only Murders in the Building has become one of the most pleasant refuges on television.

He has a trio in a state of grace. He has an impeccable casting job for the supporting roles, which have featured Nathan Lane, Jesse Williams, Tina Fey, Jane Lynch, Andrea Martin, Amy Schumer, Cara Delevingne, Amy Ryan, Matthew Broderick, Mel Brooks, Shirley MacLaine and Sting , in addition to the usual ones like Michael Cyril Creighton or Jackie Hoffman.

Siddhartha Khosla’s music complements perfectly with the aroma of old New York that the series tries to evoke in each sequence. This last season broadcast even featured a great original song by Sara Bareilles, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul sung by Streep and Park. And, between gag and gag, the team of scriptwriters creates a very particular tone: that of people aware of the lost opportunities in life who, despite their nostalgia, do not throw in the towel.

Therefore, let the show continue as long as its main stars wish, who, taking into account their age (Martin is 78 years old and 73 years old), also have the right to retire when they consider appropriate.
