Bella Hadid is one of those characters who knows how to make an impact on the red carpet so she can make headlines later. With a completely transparent brown chiffon design, the American model has hit the Cannes festival carpet with force, thus ratifying one of the most obvious trends of 2024: the naked dress.
The Côte d’Azur film festival has rather been the reconfirmation of this trend, as it has previously been seen in the run-up to the Oscars and also, at the beginning of May, on the steps of the Met. This 2024, gauze and translucent fabrics are the protagonists. Designs that leave little to the imagination and that have become the new obsession of luxury or, rather, of celebrities.
The transparent dress is known as a naked dress and although it has always had a certain prominence on red carpets with nude linings, over the years it has been extreme to reach stratospheric levels. Some play the game of distraction by combining it with nude underwear, however, many others shamelessly display their naked body covered only by that very fine gauze called naked dress.
The trend has an important relationship with the free the nipple movement – which questions the convention of considering the exposure of a woman’s nipple indecent – and the conscious exhibition of the female body in the face of the historical scrutiny that society has always carried out on them.
Beyond sheer chiffon, many designers have chosen to use more sophisticated fabrics, such as embroidery or fabrics encrusted with crystals or sequins. This last fabric is one of the most seen on the red carpet, where this year it has been worn by celebrities such as Emily Ratajkoswki and Jennifer López.
The extreme trend, as usually happens in these circuits, has not taken long to reach the streets in a more measured way. Fashion enthusiasts wear the popular naked dress with black or nude stockings or underwear and opt for corseted bras to give it a more daring look.
